YUMA, Ariz. – The AWC men’s basketball team was seeking redemption, after suffering it’s first ACCAC loss of the season last weekend at the hands of Cochise. Tonight, they would host a Chandler-Gilbert team that has struggled in conference play so far this fall.
The Matador’s pesky defense allowed them to open up an early lead over the Coyotes, before it was trimmed to 29 to 21 at the half.
But poor shooting from the floor would catch up to AWC in the second half, as the Coyotes 11-0 run would put the Mats in a slim deficit on the scoreboard for the first time on the night. AWC guard Cameron Young proved to be clutch late, as he got an assist to Zavier Harris’ transition dunk to give the Mats back the lead and then would put down a floater on the next possession to extend the lead the Mats wouldn’t lose for the rest of the contest.
Young would finish with 16 points, 6 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals on the night. The Mats would come away with the 71 to 60 victory.
They’ll next host Eastern Arizona this Saturday night.
