YUMA, Ariz. – Fourty-seven drivers were given traffic citations during an undercover police detail.

A sergeant stood at two different intersections on Fourth Avenue in plain clothes with a camera on Thursday, according to Yuma Police Department (YPD) . When the officer caught a violation on camera he would radio a marked car near by to make the traffic stop.

A total of 53 drivers where pulled over throughout the day leading to 47 traffic citations. The violations ranged from running red lights, cell phone use, speeding, seat belts, child restraints, among others. Officers say they even made three misdemeanor arrests and impounded four cars.

YPD officials say they noticed community members took to social media to spread the word about the undercover officer. Most feed back was positive with some negative response, including a person who posted to “kill” the officer. One person even stood next to the undercover officer with a sign notifying drivers about the officer.

YPD says they had the idea to go undercover after they received several complaints about drivers violating traffic laws daily at Fourth Avenue intersections. Officers say they would like to remind drivers to follow driving laws and signs.
