YUMA, Ariz. – The Yuma Police Department held their Annual Memorial Day weekend impaired driving enforcement detail and conducted 55 traffic stops over the four day period.
PIO with the Yuma Police Department, Lori Franklin said, “There are a lot of people killed every year by drunk drivers. We had 12 extra officers over the course of Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday night. Assisted by the grant money highway safety funds.”
These stops resulted in-
5 – DUI arrests, 2 of those had prior DUI arrests
1 – DUI drugs
13 – Speeding citations
28 – Other citations except speeding
14 – Sober designated drivers contacted
Last year, YPD only had five officers and they said that could be the reason for the increase.
The El Centro Police Department (ECPD) says their numbers weren’t much different than other weekend.
Commander Robert Sawyer for the ECPD said, “We had three DUI alcohol or drug related arrests over the course of Memorial Day weekend. That’s probably an average weekend for us.”
