YUMA, Ariz. – Darren Simmons who’s a recently retired lieutenant with the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office plans on running against Russ Clark for District 3 Yuma County Board of Supervisors.

Simmons said, “I’ve been the supervisor with the Sheriff’s office for that district more or less for the last 15 to 20 years and I just want to continue to serve the people.”

He wants to work with the sheriff to hire more deputies for the Foothills area. Due to the large transient population of winter visitors Simmons believes Yuma needs to increase patrols to safeguard property and be more proactive than reactive.

He adds, “I believe I’m the best candidate for the job because I’ve been out there, I’ve covered the whole area. I know the area front and back and I know I’d be the best and better candidate for the job out there.”

In regards to Russ Clark’s statements on Wednesday about Simmons telling him he had no interest in running, Simmons says he’s been thinking about this position for a while now.

“I’d been thinking about doing it and then I had backers that said we’ll support you if you want to. And like I said, this is something that I was wanting to do after the sheriff’s office, I wanted to continue to serve the public,” said Simmons.
