YUMA, Ariz. – A toddler died Wednesday after police say he drowned in his family’s swimming pool.

Yuma Police Department officials say they received a call from someone who found the 23-month-old boy in the water, unresponsive.

Police  say the child was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center where he later died. Officers are not sure how long the child was in the pool before he was found.

Sergeant Lori Franklin with YPD said there isn’t a safety gate surrounding the pool. Police say both parents rented the home and may have possibly shared the property with another couple.

Detectives are still investigating to see if there was any criminal negligence involved in the drowning.

The incident happened in the afternoon near Boxwood Avenue and 45th Place at the Ocotillo residential neighborhood.
