YUMA, Ariz- This Saturday the Yuma Food Bank will be celebrating high school students, adults and everyone who’s volunteered at the food bank to celebrate the year of mercy asked by Pope Francis.
Bishop Gerald Kicanas who’s part of the Tucson/Yuma Diocese said, “When we become aware of the corporate works of mercy. Feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, visiting those in prison, and caring for the dead.”
Bishop Gerald says they want to give a big thank you to the countless people who care deeply for others and are willing to provide food for those who’re hungry.
He adds, “The community food bank here in Yuma and in Tucson do incredibly good work. Because right here in our own midst there are people that’re hungry, children who’s only meal they have during the day would be at school.”
Bishop Gerald says he is very proud and impressed by all the support the Desert Southwest has shown to those who are in need.
He adds, “Every time I come to Yuma I’m inspired by the people here because they do care. You know Mike Ivers and the community food bank reach out in countless ways. And they involve so many volunteers from our schools.”
Mike Ivers who’s the CEO of the Yuma Food Bank says, “A little girl comes up to me and says, I know you mister, you own the food bank. And I said no, I don’t own the food bank, the Yuma community the generous community owns the food bank. Come on out and celebrate the Chavez family singers will be here it’s going to be a wonderful celebration. Celebrating the corporal work of mercy, feed the hungry.”
