YUMA, Ariz- More than 30,000 people swarm Somerton for the annual Tamale Festival every year in the month of December. The Somerton Tamale Festival was created by the El Diablito Arizona State University Alumni Chapter which are ASU graduates who have returned to work and live in the Yuma, Somerton and San Luis area. The organization fills an important need by providing scholarships for local students who will attend Arizona State University.

George Lozano, Board of Directors Somerton Tamale Festival, “It’s money that’s directed towards scholarships and education. Support our local economy and support students that’re going to ASU.”

With more than 44 different tamale vendors your taste buds are in for a treat.
Lozano said, “You can sample all types of tamales. beef, corn, even vegetarian tamales.”
Organized by the El Diablito Alumni Chapter of Arizona State University, the ninth annual event takes place Saturday on Somerton’s main street beginning at 11 a.m.
Lozano added, “We have excellent entertainment throughout the day. We have a kids zone, we have beer gardens, it’s just a great time to come out and support. I would also recommend people to bring comfortable shoes there’s a lot of walking to do. Maybe you might park far away but it’s well worth it and we welcome everyone here in Somerton.”
