YUMA, Ariz.-
A suspicious suitcase in Yuma put schools on alert. A bomb sniffing dog was called out to the Yuma County Library to check it out.
Yuma Catholic High School and Gary Knox Elementary School were put on alert for over an hour while Yuma police arrived on scene.
“It all started around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning when one staff member for the Yuma County Library found an abandoned suitcase locked to this bike rack,” Yuma County Library Community Relations Manager Sarah Wisdom said.
With no one is sight they call police.
“That was our administrative manager and she was actually the one who spotted it and she also serves as our safety officer on staff so she called it in,” Wisdom said.
The Yuma Police Department had assistance from Marine Air Core Station Yuma’s bomb sniffing dog. Police say the suitcase had clothes and personal items.
“We’ve never had a situation like this before in the time that I’ve been here. I’ve been with the library about 13.5 years and no I can’t say that we’ve ever experienced this so for our first time things went very smoothly and were very lucky that it was a non issue,” Wisdom said.
Library officials say they called police to ensure patrons safety. We asked residents if they thought calling police was the right call.
“Well yea public safety is probably always an issue,” Norm Pawloski said.
“I think that’s great that the library is cautious because with all the Isis everything now and days you never know right,” Linda Cruch said.
The suitcase still has not been identified and is now at the Yuma Police Department for safe keeping.
