SOMERTON, Ariz. – The Somerton Police Department is investigating an afternoon shooting that sent one man to the hospital Tuesday. SPD said the shooting was reported right before 2 p.m.
Officers said the shooting happened on Main Street in Somerton. They believe it was an isolated incident, and that the general public is not in any danger.
Police Chief B.B. Cotman says in his 20 years in service he has never responded to a shooting that happened in broad daylight on Main Street.
One witness we spoke with said he heard several gunshots and that moments later he saw one man carrying another man. The witness told us one of the men appeared to be injured.
Somerton police have yet to confirm any of these details.
The victim was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center. As of Tuesday evening police still had the area of Main Street closed off to traffic while investigators sifted through evidence left at the crime scene.
