YUMA, Ariz. – 8. This is the number of regular season games the AWC Lady Matadors have remaining to make a case for the Region 1 top seed and the right to host the respective tournament that would determine a potential NJCAA Tournament bid. As of Tuesday, the Lady Mats were 1 game behind Eastern Arizona for the coveted top spot.
Finishing out their final home stand of the season, the margin of error for the Lady Mats is slim. But, they would take on a Paradise Valley team they already swept on the road earlier this season. Game one would witness AWC fall into an 1st inning small deficit, before they would overcome it by the game’s halfway point and eventually go on to take the 4-1 win.
The second game would start better for the Lady Mats, as Daisy Hatcher-Taylor would score off an infielding error to give AWC the early lead before giving it up in the top half of the second. From there, the Cardinal and Gold’s offense would manufacture 8 more runs in the 2nd and 4th innings to secure the doubleheader sweep; with the 9-1 win.
AWC’s schedule will close out in more daunting fashion; as the Lady Mats host Pima on Saturday and then pay a visit to Central and Eastern Arizona next week, to wrap up the regular season. If the Lady Mats win out, they’ll host the Region 1 Tournament.
