YUMA, Ariz- Communities across the nation are requesting a ban on cell phone usuage while driving and tonight the City Council held a work session where they discussed the texting ban ordinance.

Members of the Yuma Police Department stood before the City Council this afternoon to discuss a texting while driving ban.

Sergeant Egan with the Yuma Police Department says by being able to text and drive we’re causing a safety hazard for those on the road.

Sergeant Egan said, “As I mentioned to council it’s the public safety that has to see the horrible things that people do to each other and going to accidents is one of the horrific scenes and bad scenes.”

Councilmen Edward Thomas didn’t agree with banning texting while driving, however Egan says it would benefit the community as a whole.

Egan said, “The safety of the many should out weigh a minimum intrusion into somebody’s liberties or self-imposed rights that they believe they have.”

Mayor Nicholls says it will take time to see how they want to move forward in this process.

Nicholls said, “Well personally it’s one of those things that is a very difficult subject because it does protect the personal freedoms as well as protecting the public and finding the right balance is tough.”

Sergeant Egan, “We cause a safety hazard for everybody out there. And as I mentioned to council it’s the public safety that has to see the horrible things that people do to each other and going to accidents is one of the horrific scenes and bad scenes.”
