YUMA, Ariz. – U.S. Senator John McCain is visiting Yuma Monday, ahead of the 2016 primary election in Arizona. Lorna Romero, McCain’s communications director, said the senator will be getting a private briefing from officials at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground.
McCain will also be meeting with local community leaders and the Yuma County 4-H ambassadors.
McCain’s last public visit in Yuma was in 2014.
He is battling a primary challenge from a tea party-backed state senator, Kelli Ward of Lake Havasu City. Political newcomer Alex Meluskey and several other Republicans also have filed papers seeking McCain‘s seat. McCain is going for his sixth term in the U.S. Senate.
If McCain wins the primary, he’ll face Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in November’s general election.
