SAN LUIS, Ariz. –

The city of San Luis celebrated their inaugural Christmas tree lighting ceremony Thursday night. Hundreds attended in anticipation to meet a famous guest in attendance.

The mayor of San Luis Jerry Sanchez was in attendance along with Santa Clause and his elf. Santa Clause passed out candy canes to children and took pictures with residents. The new tradition follows the $11 million restructuring project of Main Street.

“We want people to know people to see that San Luis is changing and were progressing. I call it the new San Luis. We have a new Main Street. Were open for business and were promoting our region,” Sanchez said.

The tree is 26-feet with a 3-foot Mexican star on top.

Sanchez says they’ll also be having a Christmas festival on Saturday December 12,2015. The event will take place at the Joe Orduno Park from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The event will have Christmas presents, light display, arts and crafts, food and entertainment.
