PHOENIX (AP) – A panel assembled by Gov. Doug Ducey to consider a major overhaul of the state’s school finance laws is asking for more time before it makes its final recommendations.
The Arizona Republic reports that the “Classrooms First Initiative Council” was scheduled to announce its final recommendations for changing the state’s complex funding formulas on Wednesday, but instead pushed the timeline back another six to nine months in order to allow Ducey to keep the public focused on the related school-funding ballot proposal.
The state budgets $3.9 billion in general fund money for K-12 schools in a complex formula that includes basic aid, transportation money and other specific funding.
On May 17, voters across the state will decide whether to add about $3.5 billion to schools over the next decade.
