Dia De Los Muertos being celebrated in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz.- Dia De Los Muertos translates to Day of the Dead and falls on the first two days of November. The holiday celebrates and honors the lives of loved ones that have passed on.  The first day November 1st gives honor to children that have passed while November 2nd is for adults that have passed on.

Family members that participate in the event  make alters with favorite items that their dead family member cherished.  During the night a families also gather together at the grave site of the dead and sing songs, tell stories and laugh. It is said in the tradition of the holiday, that the dead join back with the living for one night.

Sugar skulls are often seen during this time which are decorated skulls with flowers and other such decoration. The decorations are symbols of both life and death. The holiday is also known as, “All souls day” on the catholic calendar.
