YUMA, Ariz. – Kids of all ages are now going digital whether it be tablets, computers or smartphones. So pressure to teach online safety is on the rise. Apple ipads were distributed in August to all Elementary School District One students in Yuma as a learning tool. This is the first year the district is participating in a national “Digital Citizenship Week” that kicked off Monday.
Elementary and middle school teachers across the nation and now in Yuma are incorporating internet safety tactics in the classroom for one hour each day. They’ll go over how to properly handle the device and encourage positive posts. School officials stress this is also a learning curve for parents.
“We also have to help encourage our parents to monitor what they’re kids are doing. Remember the responsibility doesn’t leave everything to the school we want our parents to have equal and partnering responsibilities with us,” said Associate Superintendent Duane Sheppard.
Parents can contact their child’s school to find out when they offer evening programs for digital learning.
